From personal experience, of renovating a bathroom, I found vanities in the showrooms and stores to be very expensive. They looked cool, and shiny, and I thought would look great in my bathroom, until I saw the price tag.
One bathroom showroom I saw, actually had Lines of Credit advertising to finance my bathroom, for one low monthly payment! I felt like I was in a car showroom. In order to justify that kind of money on my bathroom renovation, I was going to have to live in there, might as well get the big screen TV! (Don't laugh, there are TV's for the bathroom too!)
I managed to find the perfect 24 inch, very modern and chic looking sink and vanity, as one unit for a lot less, than purchasing a bigger unit. But there are other ideas, that can work just as well.
If the cabinet in your bathroom vanity is in good shape, then why not just replace the top and upgrade your Faucets to something a bit more modern. Or try painting your cabinets on your vanity and replace the hardware. If you give the vanity a good cleaning, then paint it with a high adhesion primer first, you will not have to strip the cabinet. High adhesion primer will cover varnish and most surfaces, as long as they are clean of grease. Then coat with your finish color, add some new drawer pulls or cabinet knobs, and it will look brand new.
Another great DIY bathroom vanity idea, is to get a solid dresser from the antique store, or one that you own, and have a hole created in the top to sit a high sink in. Those high bowl styles that are common now. You can refinish the dresser to suit your decor. You can also have a piece of glass cut for the top, or tile it yourself, and you will have a great solid, well built vanity with storage.
If you are really on a tight budget. Paint can change the look of any room. Change the color of the walls, then add a new shower curtain, bath rug, and some new towels, and your bathroom will look totally different, without breaking the bank.
